Setting Up an Instagram Business Account

PostEverywhere requires an Instagram Professional (Creator) or Business account to connect and publish. Personal Instagram accounts are not supported due to Instagram's API restrictions.

Why is a Professional account required?

Instagram only allows third-party apps like PostEverywhere to publish content through their official Business API. This API requires your account to be either:

  • Creator account — for influencers, content creators, and public figures
  • Business account — for brands, companies, and organizations

Both account types work with PostEverywhere.

How to switch to a Professional account

  1. Open the Instagram app on your phone
  2. Go to your Profile and tap the hamburger menu (three lines)
  3. Tap Settings and privacy
  4. Scroll down and tap Account type and tools
  5. Tap Switch to professional account
  6. Choose Creator or Business (both work with PostEverywhere)
  7. Select a category that best describes your account
  8. Complete the setup steps

The switch is instant and free. You can switch back to a personal account at any time, but you'll need to disconnect from PostEverywhere first.

What changes when you switch?

Features you gain

  • Connect to PostEverywhere and other publishing tools
  • Access to Instagram Insights (analytics)
  • Contact buttons on your profile
  • Category label on your profile (optional)
  • Ability to run Instagram ads

What stays the same

  • All your followers, posts, and content remain
  • Your profile looks the same to followers
  • You can still use Instagram normally

Things to consider

  • Your account activity data becomes visible in Insights
  • Some privacy options may change (e.g., Business accounts are always public)
  • Creator accounts can be private, but must be public to use publishing APIs

After switching

Once your account is Professional or Business:

  1. Go to PostEverywhere's Accounts page
  2. Click Connect Account and select Instagram
  3. Sign in and authorize PostEverywhere
  4. Your Instagram account will appear in your connected accounts list

Troubleshooting

"Cannot connect Instagram account"

  • Make sure your account is set to Professional or Business (not Personal)
  • Ensure your account is set to Public (required for the publishing API)
  • Try logging out and back into Instagram on your phone, then retry the connection

"Publishing failed — account type error"

  • Your account may have been switched back to Personal
  • Check your Instagram settings and ensure it's still a Professional or Business account
